Apollo Mission's Legacy Captured In 'Beyond Earth' Exhibition At Sharjah Academy

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST) at the University of Sharjah (UoS) recently unveiled a captivating photography exhibition titled "Beyond Earth". This event, held in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi and its Consulate General in Dubai, is dedicated to showcasing a collection of photographs from the Apollo moon mission. The exhibition, which will be open to the public until March 11th, was inaugurated by notable attendees including Prof. Youssef Al Haik, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UoS, Meghan Gregonis, Consul General of the United States of America in Dubai, alongside several researchers and administrative staff from SAASST.

The "Beyond Earth" exhibition features an impressive array of 30 photographs captured by leading photographers in the field. Among them is Andy Saunders, renowned as one of the world’s leading experts in NASA digital restoration. Saunders has made significant contributions by restoring old film footage from the era of human exploration. In addition to Saunders’ work, the exhibition also highlights the photographic achievements of James Balog, an environmental photographer who focuses on climate change and its impacts.

Complementing the visual journey through space history, SAASST organized a scientific lecture on the development of the Artemis Accords and the evolving landscape of space governance. This lecture was part of a collaborative effort with the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi, its Consulate General in Dubai, and Redwire Space Corporation. The aim was to engage and educate the youth on the importance of international agreements and cooperation in space exploration. The lecture featured insights from Mr. Mike Gold, Chief Growth Officer at Redwire and Former NASA Associate Administrator for the Office of International and Interagency Relations.

In addition to the exhibition and lecture, attendees had the opportunity to explore SAASST’s scientific exhibitions and enjoy a screening at the Sharjah Planetarium. The event also offered hands-on activities, including using an 18cm Refractor telescope under the guidance of the Sharjah Optical Observatory (SOO) team to observe the lunar surface.

This unique blend of historical photography, scientific education, and interactive experiences underscores SAASST’s commitment to fostering an understanding and appreciation of space exploration among visitors. Through collaborations with esteemed organizations and experts in the field, "Beyond Earth" not only celebrates past achievements but also looks forward to future advancements in space governance and exploration.
