Sheikha Shamma Bint Sultan Takes Leadership Role In Waste To Zero Initiative For Global Decarbonisation
H.H. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA), will lead Waste to Zero as its new Chair. This initiative, which began at COP28, aims to decarbonise the waste sector globally. As COP29 took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, Waste to Zero celebrated its first anniversary with a renewed commitment to this mission.
The Waste to Zero initiative was originally launched by Tadweer Group and has received support from the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and Roland Berger. Its primary goal is to formalise waste management practices worldwide, engaging stakeholders to reduce emissions and create economic opportunities while contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.

Sheikha Shamma emphasised the importance of transitioning towards a circular economy. She stated, "Transitioning to a more circular economy, in which resources are consumed more mindfully and recycled more efficiently, is a critical aspect of tackling the urgent challenges of climate change. Today, almost 50% of waste is mismanaged, burned or sent to landfill, so Waste to Zero’s mission to decarbonize this sector by implementing practical new pathways to convert waste into useable resources and drive down greenhouse gas emissions is vital."
UICCA will play a crucial role in advancing Waste to Zero's next phase. The focus will be on expanding its impact beyond regional borders by sourcing practical applications and developing policy recommendations that incorporate circular economy principles. Cross-sectoral partnerships will also be forged to enhance these efforts.
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, expressed her support for Sheikha Shamma's leadership. She said, "We congratulate H.H. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, an inspiring leader in climate action and sustainability, on her leadership of the Waste to Zero Initiative. Waste to Zero is an important aspect of our nation's efforts to promote global climate action, engaging and incentivizing stakeholders to address waste sector emissions effectively and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future."
The initiative focuses on three main pillars: practical solutions, cross-sectoral partnerships, and fostering the growth potential of a circular economy. The Ministry supports these efforts as part of their commitment to keeping global warming within 1.5°C.
Strategic Partnerships
Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer Group, highlighted the significance of Sheikha Shamma's appointment as Chair. He commented that her expertise would bring renewed focus and momentum: "The appointment of H.H. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan as Chair of the Waste to Zero initiative is a pivotal step forward. Her deep expertise and visionary leadership within the climate sector will bring renewed focus and momentum to our efforts, amplifying our reach and accelerating measurable progress."
The next phase aims at creating meaningful partnerships while broadening stakeholder coalitions for scalable solutions aligned with sustainability agendas both nationally and globally.
