Shamma Bint Mohammed Discusses Civil Society's Role In Global Challenges At UNOG Meeting
Sheikha Dr. Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, recently attended the annual meeting of the UNOG Director-General with global civil society representatives. This gathering at the United Nations Office in Geneva focused on the UN's priorities and civil society's role in tackling worldwide issues.
The discussions at the meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between the UN and civil society to promote peace, coexistence, and community resilience amid rapid global changes. Sheikha Dr. Shamma emphasised that tolerance is essential for a functioning civil society, which relies on knowledge and good governance.

Sheikha Dr. Shamma pointed out the significant impact of social media on everyday life. While these platforms amplify voices, they also spread hate speech. Despite efforts by social media companies to curb hate speech, she believes true protection comes from individual and collective awareness.
The UAE has implemented a comprehensive strategy to combat hate speech, including the 2015 Anti-Discrimination and Hatred Law. This law criminalises content threatening national unity or inciting religious or ethnic hatred. Sheikha Dr. Shamma highlighted this as part of the UAE's commitment to tolerance.
She also mentioned the pioneering establishment of the Ministry of Tolerance in the UAE, which is unique globally. This ministry actively promotes a culture of tolerance and coexistence through various initiatives.
Civil Society's Contribution to Tolerance
Civil society organisations in the UAE play a vital role in supporting state efforts through workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns aimed at fostering understanding and respect among diverse communities. Sheikha Dr. Shamma noted that over 200 nationalities live harmoniously in the UAE, reflecting its commitment to tolerance.
"The true defence against hate speech is building consciousness—this is where civil society institutions play a vital role," she stated. Her words underscore the importance of awareness in combating hate speech effectively.
The meeting underscored that fostering peace and coexistence requires cooperation between international bodies like the UN and local civil societies worldwide. The UAE's approach serves as an example of how nations can integrate tolerance into their national vision.
