SFDA Elected To ICH Management Committee To Strengthen Global Pharmaceutical Standards

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has been chosen as a member of the Management Committee of the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH). This election, which includes 15 other organisations, highlights SFDA's global reputation and scientific expertise. The authority attributes this recognition to its skilled workforce and commitment to ensuring medicine safety and efficacy.

ICH is a unique global council that unites regulatory bodies and major pharmaceutical companies. It focuses on discussing scientific and technical aspects of pharmaceuticals, developing guidelines, and setting standards for evaluating their safety, efficacy, and quality. These guidelines are crucial in assessing pharmaceutical products worldwide.

SFDA Joins ICH Management Committee

The ICH aims to enhance public health by promoting global harmonisation. It seeks to prevent unnecessary duplication of clinical trials and improve the development and manufacturing processes of new medicines. Additionally, it strives to reduce animal testing without compromising medication safety and efficacy while keeping up with global advancements in medicine regulation.

The Management Committee plays a vital role in overseeing operational aspects such as administrative and financial matters within ICH's working groups. It is tasked with submitting recommendations or proposals to the ICH Assembly for further discussion and decision-making.

Besides SFDA, the committee includes several prominent members: the US Food and Drug Administration, World Health Organization, European Commission, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency of Japan, Health Canada, Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency, Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, China’s National Medical Products Administration.

Other members are the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries Associations, International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations, International Generic and Biosimilar Medicines Association, Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

This diverse membership underscores the collaborative effort required to address global pharmaceutical challenges effectively. By working together under ICH's framework, these organisations aim to streamline processes that ensure safe and effective medicines reach patients worldwide efficiently.
