SFDA Highlights Importance Of Breastfeeding For Infant And Maternal Health During World Breastfeeding Week

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has underscored the significance of breastfeeding during World Breastfeeding Week, observed from August 1 to 7. The SFDA highlighted breastfeeding's crucial role in promoting both maternal and infant health. Breast milk is described as the optimal nourishment for newborns, being easily digestible and tailored to a baby's stomach capacity.

Breastfeeding offers numerous advantages for infants, including enhanced immunity through maternal antibodies. It also lowers the likelihood of allergies, asthma, diabetes, and anemia. Additionally, breastfeeding supports healthy brain and body development and reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in early months.

Mothers also benefit significantly from breastfeeding. The SFDA noted that it decreases the chances of developing breast and ovarian cancers as well as osteoporosis. Furthermore, breastfeeding aids in postpartum weight loss and helps the uterus return to its normal size due to oxytocin release.

To fully harness these benefits, the SFDA advises starting breastfeeding within an hour after birth. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months is recommended, along with feeding on demand rather than following a strict schedule.

The SFDA suggests maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and ensuring adequate rest for mothers. Seeking expert advice is encouraged if any challenges arise during breastfeeding. These practices aim to maximize health outcomes for both mother and child.
