SFDA Receives Prestigious Arab Digital Government Award For AI Initiative In Drug Availability
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has been awarded the 2025 Arab Digital Government Award in the "Artificial Intelligence Initiatives" category. This recognition was given for their project, "Using Artificial Intelligence in Drug Availability," during the award's 20th edition held in Dubai. The event, organised by the Arab Digital Government Authority, honours exceptional government bodies throughout the Arab region.
The SFDA's initiative aims to tackle the pressing issue of ensuring a steady supply of essential medicines. Previously, there were no effective solutions for this challenge. By implementing this initiative, SFDA seeks to improve health outcomes and ensure everyone has access to necessary healthcare services.

The Arab Digital Government Award encourages innovation in government websites and smart applications across Arab countries. It highlights how technological advancements can support sustainable development. The award also aims to discover and cultivate innovative talent in e-government and smart governance sectors.
SFDA's success in winning this award is due to meeting strict criteria for the "Artificial Intelligence Initiatives" track. These criteria include the initiative’s origin, uniqueness, practical use, financial and regulatory needs, implementation challenges, measurable results, growth potential, scalability, number of beneficiaries, responsiveness, and public satisfaction levels.
This award reflects SFDA's dedication to digital transformation and integrating artificial intelligence technologies into its operations. By using digital solutions, SFDA aims to enhance product safety and ensure medicine availability. One significant achievement is issuing Saudi Arabia’s first license for a medical software development factory under the Medical Software Developers Licensing Initiative.
Additionally, SFDA established "SAIL" (SFDA Artificial Intelligence Laboratory) to promote innovation and development. Other initiatives focus on improving regulatory and operational efficiency within the authority.
Through these efforts, SFDA continues to demonstrate its commitment to leveraging technology for better healthcare outcomes. Their initiatives not only address current challenges but also pave the way for future advancements in healthcare accessibility and safety.
