SFD Signs $60 Million Development Agreement To Strengthen Energy Sector In Mauritania

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) is actively involved in a significant project to supply potable water to Kiffa from the Senegal River. This initiative, marked by the laying of the foundation stone, was attended by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and Saudi Ambassador Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Raqabi. The SFD is co-financing this project with a $100 million concessional development loan.

More than 500,000 people across 25 villages and communities will benefit from this water project. It aims to meet the increasing demand for drinking water, reduce reliance on unsafe sources, and curb waterborne diseases. The infrastructure will include pipelines stretching over 250 kilometers to enhance water security in the region.

SFD Signs $60 Million Energy Agreement

In addition to the water project, SFD CEO Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad signed a $60 million concessional loan agreement with Mauritania's Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, Abdullah Suleiman Cheikh Sidiya. This funding will support an electricity interconnection project between Mauritania and Mali, along with developing solar power stations.

This energy initiative aims to strengthen Mauritania's energy sector by expanding transmission networks and connecting cities from Nouakchott over 1,373 kilometers. It will provide electricity to 150 villages and communities, establishing 11 substations at 225 kilovolts with a total capacity of 600 megawatts.

The collaboration between SFD and Mauritania has been ongoing since 1979. Over this period, the fund has supported 31 development projects through concessional loans and grants from Saudi Arabia via the SFD. These efforts have contributed approximately $1 billion towards vital sectors across various regions in Mauritania.

The electricity project is expected to improve living conditions for more than 480,000 beneficiaries. By enhancing energy distribution and quality of life, it reflects the continued commitment of both nations to fostering sustainable development in Mauritania.
