Challenge Sir Bani Yas Triathlon 2026 Kicks Off In Abu Dhabi With Broad International Participation

Challenge Sir Bani Yas returns to Sir Bani Yas Island in Abu Dhabi from 30 January to 1 February 2026, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region. The three-day triathlon is set to be the region’s largest full-distance event.

The 2026 edition draws 4,804 registered athletes, both professional and amateur, which is a 55% increase on the 2025 field. Participants represent 91 nationalities, with 42 of them appearing at the event for the first time, highlighting expanding global interest.

Challenge Sir Bani Yas 2026 Opens in Abu Dhabi

Organised by ADNEC Group, a Modon company, the event is held in partnership with Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Challenge Family, with support from ADNOC. The field includes more than 103 professional athletes from 26 countries, showing a 102% rise in elite participation compared with 2025.

The United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, India, the Philippines and Germany provide the largest numbers of competitors. This mix underlines the event’s growing appeal among regional and overseas triathletes, and reflects Abu Dhabi’s strategy to attract visiting athletes and accompanying supporters.

Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said, "This event reflects our commitment to promoting a sporting lifestyle among all members of the community and demonstrates our ongoing dedication to supporting the vision of our wise leadership, which prioritises families and their health. It also reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global destination for hosting major sporting events."

Al Awani stated that the second edition supports social wellbeing aims, by encouraging residents and visitors to integrate sport into daily life. The event is described as a platform that increases physical and mental health, while bringing together people of different ages, backgrounds and abilities through shared participation.

Al Awani added that the second edition of the Challenge Sir Bani Yas continues to achieve its goals of embedding the concept of sport as a way of life, encouraging community participation, and contributing to improving quality of life by enhancing physical and mental health. It also instils values of activity and vitality among all segments of society, as sport serves as a bridge that unites individuals of all ages and abilities.

Challenge Sir Bani Yas triathlon scale and regional status

The event is regarded as one of the key long-distance triathlons in the Middle East and North Africa. It offers a course across Sir Bani Yas Island, which is a natural reserve and one of the United Arab Emirates’ most distinctive islands, combining sport with environmental awareness.

Challenge Sir Bani Yas triathlon race formats and distances

Athletes compete across three race formats: long-distance, middle-distance and Olympic-distance triathlons. Each format combines swimming, cycling and running legs, allowing experienced professionals and developing triathletes to choose distances that match training levels and performance targets.

The long-distance triathlon covers 218 kilometres, with a 3.8-kilometre swim, 172-kilometre cycle and 42.2-kilometre run. The middle-distance totals 105 kilometres, including a 1.9-kilometre swim, 82-kilometre bike leg and 21.2-kilometre run. The Olympic-distance event spans 47.5 kilometres, featuring a 1.5-kilometre swim, 36-kilometre cycle and 10-kilometre run.

Challenge Sir Bani Yas triathlon tourism, island setting and side events

Alongside the main races, organisers schedule community activities and shorter competitions aimed at families, beginners and amateurs. These programmes are designed to open access to triathlon, create an inclusive festival atmosphere, and encourage participation from people with different fitness levels and sporting experience.
