SDRPY Leads Restoration Of Historic Seiyun Palace In Hadhramaut To Preserve Cultural Heritage

Seiyun Palace in Hadhramaut, eastern Yemen, is undergoing a significant restoration to revive its historical grandeur. The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) is spearheading this effort to preserve the palace's cultural significance. This architectural gem, once featured on Yemen’s currency, reflects the rich heritage of Yemeni design.

Originally built as a fortified structure to safeguard Seiyun city, the palace later became the residence of Kathiri state sultans who governed Wadi Hadhramaut. Over time, natural elements took their toll, leading to severe damage. In 2022, a major section of its outer wall collapsed, raising alarms about its preservation.

Restoration of Seiyun Palace in Hadhramaut

The Yemeni government requested assistance to restore this landmark. SDRPY responded by launching a comprehensive restoration project. This initiative is funded by SDRPY and executed by UNESCO in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Yemen’s General Organization of Antiquities and Museums. Yemen’s Social Fund for Development provides logistical and technical support.

The restoration includes repairing the damaged outer wall and mudbrick structures that form the palace's core. Special focus is on restoring wooden ceilings, carved doors, and windows showcasing Yemeni artisans' craftsmanship. Traditional decorations and wall inscriptions are also being rehabilitated to maintain the palace's unique architectural identity.

Local engineers and technicians received training in routine restoration techniques to ensure ongoing maintenance of Seiyun Palace. This project not only preserves a vital cultural site but also enhances development in Hadhramaut by supporting Yemen’s historical heritage.

The restored palace is now better prepared to host numerous visitors throughout the year. It can accommodate various cultural events, reinforcing its status as an important cultural and tourism landmark.

Broader Impact of SDRPY Initiatives

The Seiyun Palace restoration is part of a larger package comprising 264 projects initiated by SDRPY across Yemen. These projects cover key sectors such as education, health, transportation, energy, water, agriculture, fisheries, institutional capacity building, and integrated development programs.

This extensive effort underscores SDRPY's commitment to supporting Yemen's development while preserving its rich cultural heritage for future generations.
