SDRPY Transforms Yemen’s Al Abr Road To Enhance Safety And Connectivity For Millions

Yemen's Al Abr Road, once notorious for its perilous conditions and frequent accidents, has undergone a significant transformation. The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) spearheaded extensive rehabilitation efforts to convert it into a crucial transportation corridor. This road is vital within Yemen's transport network, linking the governorates of Marib, Hadhramaut, and Shabwah, and serving as a key connection between Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Thousands of travellers depend on Al Abr Road daily due to limited alternatives. It serves those entering Yemen through the Al-Wadiah land port and Seiyun International Airport, as well as those departing via these gateways. SDRPY initiated a comprehensive project to rehabilitate and upgrade this essential route. The first phase was completed in May 2024, covering 50 kilometres from Al-Duwaibi to Al Abr in Hadhramaut.

SDRPY Upgrades Yemen’s Al Abr Road for Safety

The initial phase involved widening the road, resurfacing it, installing safety features, and enhancing navigation according to international standards. Currently, phase two is underway, extending 40 kilometres from Ghuwayrban to Al-Duwaibi. Ambassador Mohammed Saeed Al Jabir, Supervisor General of SDRPY, announced the completion of the first phase. He described the upgraded route as a "road of life" and confirmed that further phases are progressing.

SDRPY data indicates that over 11 million Yemenis are anticipated to benefit from this road improvement. The program plays a pivotal role in enhancing Yemen’s transportation infrastructure through more than 30 development initiatives. These include upgrading ports, border crossings, airports, and major roads to improve safety and facilitate access to markets and essential services.

Through 264 projects and initiatives, SDRPY continues supporting critical sectors across various Yemeni governorates. These sectors include education, health, water, energy, transportation, agriculture and fisheries, institutional capacity building, and broader development programs. Such efforts aim to strengthen Yemen’s social and economic connectivity.

The ongoing improvements by SDRPY are expected to significantly enhance transportation safety in Yemen. By facilitating better access to markets and services through improved infrastructure like Al Abr Road, these projects contribute positively to the country's socio-economic landscape.
