SDRPY Enhances Water Security In Yemen’s Aden And Hadhramaut With Renewable Energy Projects
The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) is actively working to improve infrastructure and essential services in Yemen. The program has launched 58 projects focused on enhancing the water sector, one of eight critical areas it supports. These initiatives aim to improve water resource management, diversify sources, and boost distribution efficiency in both urban and rural regions.
In collaboration with the Selah Foundation for Development, SDRPY has initiated two projects to enhance water security using renewable energy in Aden and Hadhramaut. These projects focus on strengthening water sources by leveraging renewable energy, ensuring sustainability, reducing operational costs, and building personnel capacity to manage solar energy systems effectively.

In Aden, the project involves upgrading 10 wells in the Bi'r Ahmed field with a solar power station producing 600 kilowatts. This reduces electricity dependence for well operations, lowering production costs. The upgrade is expected to increase the field's water production capacity by 36%, benefiting approximately 800,000 people in the governorate.
The Hadhramaut project focuses on diversifying water sources and improving basic water needs across nine districts along the coast and valley. By utilizing solar energy systems, this initiative reduces fuel reliance for well operations. It aims to benefit around 1.7 million people directly and indirectly.
SDRPY's efforts extend beyond water security. Through 264 projects and initiatives, it supports key sectors across various Yemeni governorates. These include education, health, energy, transportation, agriculture and fisheries, capacity building for the Yemeni government, and other developmental programs.
The comprehensive approach of SDRPY highlights its commitment to sustainable development in Yemen. By focusing on renewable energy solutions and efficient resource management, these projects not only address immediate needs but also ensure long-term benefits for communities across the country.
