SDRPY Enhances Water Security In Yemen’s Aden And Hadhramaut With Renewable Energy Projects

The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) is actively working to enhance infrastructure and essential services in Yemen. Through 58 projects, the program focuses on improving the water sector, which is one of eight critical areas supported by SDRPY. These efforts aim to improve water resource management, diversify sources, and increase distribution efficiency in both urban and rural regions.

In Aden, a significant project involves upgrading 10 wells in the Bi'r Ahmed field using renewable energy. A solar power station with a 600-kilowatt capacity has been installed to reduce electricity dependence and lower water production costs. This initiative is expected to boost the field's water production by 36%, benefiting approximately 800,000 residents.

SDRPY Launches Water Projects in Yemen

SDRPY's commitment to renewable energy is evident in its projects in Aden and Hadhramaut. These initiatives are conducted in collaboration with the Selah Foundation for Development. By relying on solar energy, these projects ensure sustainable water resources while reducing operational expenses. They also focus on training personnel to operate and maintain solar systems effectively.

The Hadhramaut project aims to diversify water sources and meet basic needs across nine districts along the governorate’s coast and valley. By utilising solar energy systems, it reduces fuel dependency for well operations. This initiative is set to benefit around 1.7 million people directly and indirectly.

Beyond water projects, SDRPY has implemented 264 initiatives supporting various sectors throughout Yemeni governorates. These include education, health, energy, transportation, agriculture, fisheries, capacity building for the Yemeni government, and other developmental programs.

The two projects in Aden and Hadhramaut exemplify SDRPY's dedication to enhancing Yemen's water security through renewable energy solutions. These efforts not only ensure sustainable water supply but also contribute significantly to reducing operational costs while empowering local personnel with necessary skills.

Overall, SDRPY's comprehensive approach addresses multiple sectors crucial for Yemen's development. By focusing on sustainable solutions like renewable energy for water security, the program plays a vital role in improving living conditions across the country.
