Saudi Data Authority Utilizes AI For Environmental Goals, Aligning With Vision 2030
The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) is at the forefront of integrating smart solutions across various developmental sectors within the Kingdom, utilizing the potential of data and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. These initiatives are aimed at supporting national efforts to preserve the environment and natural resources, thereby contributing to a sustainable future. This aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, highlighting SDAIA's pivotal role as the national reference for data and AI, overseeing their organization and development.
SDAIA's commitment extends to enhancing Saudi Arabia's stature as a global leader in the data and AI domain. This involves fostering investment, innovation, and the technological infrastructure necessary for development. The authority has prioritized the adoption of AI in areas that align with national priorities, leveraging its expertise in operations, research, and innovation within the data and AI sector.

A significant milestone in SDAIA's journey is the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence in Environment, Water, and Agriculture. This initiative is in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, aiming to create innovative AI-based solutions for these critical sectors. The center focuses on building a comprehensive data lake that includes geospatial data and global satellite imagery spanning over three decades. This repository aids in conducting research that benefits the environment, water, and agriculture sectors through AI applications.
SDAIA's efforts have led to the development of an AI-based life model that analyses nine historical earth data sets to predict changes in vegetation cover with over 90% accuracy for the upcoming six years. This model is instrumental in combating climate change effects, predicting desertification trends, and enhancing vegetation cover. Furthermore, SDAIA has developed a data dashboard on vegetation cover change in the Kingdom, featuring 6 billion data samples from the Normalized Difference Vegetation (NDVI) Index monitored from 1984 to 2023.
The "Smart Planet Program" launched by SDAIA represents an intelligent platform for earth data analysis. It utilizes historical data to construct predictive algorithms aimed at addressing environmental challenges. This program collaborates closely with nature reserves and the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture to share preliminary AI algorithm solutions for sustainable resource exploitation.
In a parallel initiative, the Ministry of Energy has partnered with SDAIA to launch the Artificial Intelligence Center for Energy. This center seeks to leverage AI in supporting initiatives within the energy sector that contribute to Saudi Arabia's Green Initiative goals of reducing carbon emissions. It combines digital technology expertise with energy sector knowledge to develop AI solutions prioritized for their impact.
Additionally, SDAIA is leveraging satellite imagery through the National Smart Cities Platform to monitor reforestation efforts and green areas in Riyadh. This initiative aims at providing visual representations of green spaces within Riyadh and Diriyah, developing indicators for neighborhoods with high green area indexes, and offering tools for monitoring green area levels on the National Smart Cities Platform.
Through these multifaceted initiatives, SDAIA is not only advancing Saudi Arabia's capabilities in data and AI but also contributing significantly towards environmental sustainability and resource management. These efforts underscore the Kingdom's commitment to achieving its ambitious Saudi Vision 2030 objectives while promoting a sustainable future.
