SBA Recognises Mohamed Selmawi As Cultural Personality Of The Year For 2025

The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) has honoured Egyptian writer Mohamed Selmawi as the "Cultural Personality of the Year" for the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair in 2025. This accolade acknowledges his extensive literary career, which spans over five decades, and his significant contributions to theatre, novels, and Arab cultural initiatives.

Selmawi is a leading figure in Egypt's literary scene, known for his prolific writing and unique theatrical works. His influence extends beyond Egypt, with his works translated into multiple languages including English, French, Italian, German, Romanian, Hindi, and Urdu. His plays have been performed in countries such as France, Italy, Germany, the US, and Canada.

Mohamed Selmawi Named Cultural Personality of Year

Born in Cairo in 1945, Selmawi pursued English literature at Cairo University. He furthered his education with a master's degree in mass communication from the American University in Cairo and a diploma in Shakespearean theatre from Oxford University. His academic background laid a strong foundation for his literary pursuits.

Selmawi's career includes pivotal roles within Egypt’s cultural sphere. He served as head of the Egyptian Writers’ Union and editor of Al-Ahram Hebdo and Al-Ahram Weekly. Notably, Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz personally selected him to represent him at the 1988 Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm.

Throughout his career, Selmawi has received numerous international accolades. These include France’s Order of Arts and Letters (Knight), Italy’s Order of Merit, Belgium’s Crown Medal, Senegal’s Grand Peace Prize, along with Egypt’s State Appreciation and Nile Literary Awards. These honours reflect his impact on both national and international stages.

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, stated that this recognition underscores Sharjah’s dedication to celebrating Arab cultural figures who contribute significantly to human awareness and enrich the region's literary landscape.

Notable Works

Selmawi's notable plays include "Fout Alina Bokra," "Salome," "Al-Janzeer," and "Al-Qatel Kharij Al-Sijn." His novels such as "The Coloured Beads," "Butterfly Wings," and "Fire Flower" have also garnered attention for their unique storytelling.

Currently serving as Chairman of Al-Masry Al-Youm while continuing to write for Al-Ahram newspaper, Selmawi remains an influential voice in literature. He expressed that receiving recognition from Sharjah is particularly meaningful due to the emirate's commitment to supporting authentic Arab cultural identity.
