SAWA Conference Marks Ten Years Of Cultural Exchange And Museum Learning In Sharjah

The Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) is hosting the "SAWA: A Decade of Cross-Cultural Museum Learning" conference on 4th and 5th November 2024. This event commemorates ten years of the SAWA Museum Studies Programme, a joint effort by SMA, Berlin State Museums, Goethe-Institute Gulf Region, and University of Applied Sciences Berlin. The hybrid format allows global participation through in-person attendance at Sharjah Archaeology Museum and online streaming.

Supported by the Consulate General of Germany in Dubai, this conference underscores the UAE-Germany partnership in promoting cultural exchange and museum education. Organised with Crescent Group as Strategic Partner and Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority as Platinum Partner, it celebrates SAWA's influence on participants and the cultural landscape.

Celebrating a Decade of SAWA Cultural Exchange

The SAWA Conference will be a vibrant forum for exploring key concepts from its curriculum. It offers unique networking opportunities for museum professionals, enhancing connections across cultures. Over time, the SAWA programme has enriched participants' professional and personal lives, equipping them to handle museum sector challenges effectively.

This initiative has also played a crucial role in advancing cultural diplomacy and global understanding. By sharing knowledge between Sharjah and Berlin, it has fostered stronger ties through shared experiences and ideas.

The conference will feature keynote speeches from notable figures like Sheikh Fahim AlQasimi, who will discuss museums' significance in Sharjah's cultural sector and international relations. H.E. Aisha Deemas will provide insights into SAWA's establishment, growth, future direction, and the role of Sharjah’s museums in promoting culture.

Sybille Pfaff, Consul General of Germany in Dubai, will highlight the Consulate’s role in fostering cultural exchanges. She will emphasize international collaborations' importance in enhancing cultural understanding through initiatives like SAWA.

Discussions on Museum Standards

Morning sessions will include local and international experts discussing how international cooperation among cultural institutions impacts museum standards. They will also focus on professional development for museum staff and services.

Leading speakers will address how museums can improve audience engagement and outreach. Key topics such as exhibition curation and display strategies will be explored to enhance visitor experiences.

Panel Discussion on Challenges

The conference will conclude with a panel discussion titled "Aspirations and Obstacles: Striving for Impact Amidst Challenges." This session aims to address the hurdles faced by museums while striving for impactful contributions to society.
