Saudipedia Highlights Importance Of Geographical Name Documentation At United Nations Forum
Saudipedia, a digital encyclopedia from Saudi Arabia, was highlighted at the United Nations in New York City. Editor-in-Chief Hamed Alshehri presented a paper during the fourth session of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, held from April 28 to May 2. The presentation focused on Saudipedia's innovative role as a reliable source for information about Saudi Arabia.
Launched by Media Minister Salman Al-Dossary in February 2024, Saudipedia is part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 Human Capability Development Program. It aims to serve as a comprehensive digital reference for Saudi affairs. The platform offers encyclopedic content enriched with multimedia and is regularly updated to reflect the Kingdom's diverse cultural, historical, and natural landscape.

Alshehri's paper covered six key areas, including documenting the cultural and historical origins of geographical names and their evolution over time. He emphasized making these names accessible in multiple languages. Currently available in Arabic, English, French, and Chinese, Saudipedia plans to launch Russian and German versions later this year.
The presentation also addressed improving search engine visibility and proposed solutions for standardizing the spelling of geographical names within a comprehensive database. This effort aims to enhance accessibility and ensure consistency across different platforms.
Saudipedia plays a crucial role in preserving Saudi Arabia's spatial identity by meticulously documenting city names, villages, natural landmarks, and archaeological sites. These are linked to their historical and social contexts through interactive maps and official sources. This approach enhances awareness of the Kingdom's geographical and cultural richness.
The platform collaborates closely with the National Committee for Geographical Names to ensure continuous updates and accuracy. This partnership is vital for maintaining an up-to-date repository of geographical information that reflects Saudi Arabia's evolving landscape.
Vision for a Comprehensive Resource
Alshehri highlighted Saudipedia's vision as a comprehensive digital reference for Saudi affairs. The platform aims to be a key knowledge resource about Saudi Arabia by publishing encyclopedic content enriched with multimedia elements. This ensures that users have access to reliable information about the Kingdom.
"Saudipedia contributes significantly to preserving the Kingdom's spatial identity," said Alshehri during his presentation. "It enhances awareness of its geographical and cultural richness by documenting cities, villages, natural landmarks, and archaeological sites."
The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals by promoting knowledge sharing and enhancing human capabilities through accessible digital resources. As Saudipedia expands its language offerings and improves its database, it continues to solidify its position as an essential tool for understanding Saudi Arabia's diverse heritage.
