Saudi Vice Minister Of Finance Abdulmuhsen Alkhalaf Discusses AIIB Progress And Sustainable Infrastructure Initiatives
Saudi Vice Minister of Finance Abdulmuhsen Alkhalaf attended the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) annual meetings on September 25-26 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. During his speech, he commended AIIB's progress, highlighting its success in surpassing financing volume targets and achieving strategic goals. This success underscores AIIB's dedication to funding sustainable infrastructure across member countries.
The vice minister emphasised the importance of expanding AIIB's investment in technologies that align with the circular carbon economy approach. He specifically mentioned technologies related to carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS). Saudi Arabia has been a strong proponent of this concept, promoting it through initiatives like the Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives.

Alkhalaf stressed the need for increased efforts in implementing projects that address fundamental human needs, such as water and food security. With the rising global demand for resources, these projects are vital for maintaining social and economic stability. Investing in these sectors also strengthens communities' resilience against challenges posed by climate change and population growth.
On the sidelines of the meetings, Alkhalaf engaged with finance ministers and government officials from member nations. These discussions focused on exploring opportunities for cooperation and partnerships in economic and financial sectors. Such collaborations aim to enhance mutual benefits among member countries.
The governors approved the AIIB Annual Report for 2023 during the meetings. Additionally, they welcomed the Republic of Nauru as a new member of the AIIB board of governors. This inclusion marks another step towards expanding AIIB's global reach and influence.
Saudi Arabia holds a founding membership status in AIIB, which was established in Beijing in 2016 as a multilateral development finance institution. The country's involvement reflects its commitment to supporting international development efforts through collaborative platforms like AIIB.
The vice minister's participation highlights Saudi Arabia's active role in promoting sustainable development and fostering international cooperation within AIIB's framework. By advocating for innovative solutions and partnerships, Saudi Arabia aims to contribute significantly to addressing global challenges.
