Saudi Arabia Explores Lithium Mining Opportunities In Chile

Vice Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources for Mining Affairs Khalid bin Saleh Al-Mudaifer recently visited the Salar de Atacama lithium mine in Chile. The visit aimed to explore the mine's operations and advanced capabilities. With an annual production capacity of 210,000 tons, Salar de Atacama contributes 22% of the world's lithium supply.

During his tour, Al-Mudaifer observed modern mining techniques and research activities at the site in northern Chile's Atacama Desert. He was briefed on mineral processing improvements and plans for production expansion. Additionally, he met with Joaquín Villarino, chief executive of the Chilean Mining Council (Consejo Minero).

Al-Mudaifer highlighted Saudi Arabia's efforts to develop its mining sector during his meeting with Villarino. He emphasized the opportunities provided by the Kingdom's comprehensive mining strategy and discussed potential incentives for investors. They also talked about strategic partnerships to meet global mining targets, including energy transition and resource provision.

The vice minister invited Villarino to participate in the Future Minerals Forum, scheduled for January 2025 in Saudi Arabia. This forum is part of a global initiative by the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources to enhance and sustain the mining sector. Invitations were also extended to major companies associated with the Chilean Mining Council.

Al-Mudaifer also met with Molymet's deputy head to discuss investment opportunities in Saudi Arabia's mining sector. They reviewed Molymet's capabilities in molybdenum production and recycling technologies used in copper mines. These discussions are part of a broader effort to attract qualitative investments into the Kingdom's mining industry.

This visit is part of a larger official trip to Chile and Brazil led by Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef. The delegation includes industry and mining leaders aiming to strengthen bilateral relations in these sectors. The goal is to explore mutual investment opportunities in mineral production and processing.

Al-Mudaifer’s meetings underscore Saudi Arabia’s commitment to enhancing its mining sector through international cooperation and advanced technologies. By fostering strategic partnerships, the Kingdom aims to achieve its global mining objectives while promoting sustainable development within the industry.
