Saudi-US Relations: Exploring Nine Decades Of Strategic Partnership And Cooperation

His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, is currently visiting the United States. This visit, at the invitation of President Donald J. Trump, underscores Washington's acknowledgment of Saudi Arabia's crucial role in fostering regional and global security. The trip highlights the enduring strength of Saudi-US relations, which continue to expand across various sectors.

The Saudi-US relationship began with King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud and President Franklin Roosevelt. Their initial political and economic partnership evolved into a strategic alliance based on mutual trust and shared interests. This foundation was laid in the 1930s with an oil concession agreement between Saudi Arabia and American Standard Oil of California (SOCAL), establishing long-term cooperation.

Nine Decades of Saudi-US Strategic Partnership

The discovery of oil solidified Saudi Arabia's position in global energy markets. It also framed the US view of the Kingdom as a reliable partner for energy security. A historic meeting aboard the USS Quincy between King Abdulaziz and President Roosevelt established modern Saudi-US relations. Despite global upheavals, this relationship has remained steadfast over the decades.

After World War II, Middle East stability became crucial for international balance. Saudi Arabia played a central role in maintaining this stability while receiving military and technical support from the United States to strengthen its defense capabilities. Agreements on training, armaments, and intelligence cooperation solidified Saudi Arabia as a key partner in combating terrorism.

Economic relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States have grown steadily over time. From 2013 to 2024, total trade reached approximately $500 billion. In 2024 alone, trade amounted to $32 billion—$13 billion in Saudi exports and $19 billion in imports—covering metals, chemicals, machinery, and agricultural products.

The Public Investment Fund (PIF) holds 40% of its global portfolio in the United States, reflecting strong confidence in its economy. Around 1,300 American companies operate in Saudi Arabia, with 200 having regional headquarters in Riyadh. This economic partnership supports job creation and contributes to GDP growth in the Kingdom.

Advancing Strategic Sectors

The defense sector remains one of the oldest aspects of Saudi-US cooperation. It has evolved to include knowledge transfer and localization of military technologies under Vision 2030’s goal of localizing nearly half of military spending. Economic ties continue to grow with significant investments in various sectors.

Saudi Arabia and the United States have built close cooperation in oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors over past decades. They now aim to expand this partnership to include renewable energy, clean hydrogen, and energy efficiency under Vision 2030. The space sector has also become a key area for collaboration.

Educational Exchange

The United States remains a vital destination for Saudi students pursuing higher education. In 2025, there were 14,845 Saudis studying at American universities in fields like engineering, medicine, and business. This educational exchange strengthens ties between both nations by fostering mutual understanding through academic collaboration.

The current visit by HRH the Crown Prince emphasizes Saudi Arabia’s political standing globally while highlighting its central role in regional security efforts alongside expanding economic partnerships across multiple sectors.

This strategic relationship continues to be a cornerstone for regional stability as well as global prosperity due to political rapprochement along with growing sectoral cooperation between these two nations.
