Saudi Arabia And The US Enhance Defense Capabilities With 'Protection Shield 4' Exercise
The Eastern Region Command of the Saudi Armed Forces, in a significant collaboration with the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), has successfully conducted "Protection Shield 4," a comprehensive joint military exercise. This strategic initiative, based in Dhahran, saw the participation of various branches of the Saudi military along with key representatives from both civilian and military government agencies. Among the participants were the Ministry of Defense's health services, the General Directorate of Civil Defense, the Ministry of Health, and the Saudi Red Crescent Authority.
Colonel Turki bin Salem Al-Sumairi, who led the mixed battalion in this exercise, outlined the primary goals of "Protection Shield 4." The exercise aimed at bolstering collective capabilities to counter threats from weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), promoting a unified response strategy through shared concepts, procedures, and skills, and enhancing awareness regarding chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) hazards.

The exercise was marked by a series of rigorous field exercises designed to test national response plans against potential WMD attacks. It also aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of information and report exchange among participating forces. Moreover, it facilitated the development of joint field response protocols. To simulate a realistic crisis management operation in a WMD scenario, simulated munitions were employed.
In a parallel effort to strengthen joint interoperability and response capabilities for chemical and biological incidents, healthcare personnel from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Health, the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and the Saudi Red Crescent Authority conducted a focused exercise. This initiative underscores the comprehensive approach taken by Saudi Arabia in enhancing its preparedness and response mechanisms against potential WMD threats.
The collaboration between Saudi forces and USCENTCOM through "Protection Shield 4" reflects a significant step forward in strengthening defense ties and operational readiness against WMDs. By incorporating various governmental agencies in these exercises, Saudi Arabia demonstrates its holistic approach to national security and emergency preparedness.
