Saudi Universities Showcase AI Expertise At Global AI Summit In Riyadh
The third Global AI Summit in Riyadh, organised by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), showcased the progress of Saudi universities in artificial intelligence (AI). This event highlighted the Kingdom's efforts to enhance scientific research and improve the quality of academic outputs. Several universities, including King Saud University (KSU), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University (PNU), participated.
KSU presented over 21 innovative AI use cases, reinforcing its status as a leading research hub. These projects align with national priorities in research, development, and innovation. The focus areas include human health, environmental sustainability, energy and industry leadership, and future economies. KSU’s achievements were further highlighted by its 90th position in the Shanghai Global Ranking.

Human health was a key area where AI is being used to develop medical solutions within university medical cities and health colleges. These solutions aim to improve disease diagnosis and overall healthcare. Environmental sustainability efforts involve using AI to manage natural resources better and preserve ecosystems.
One notable project at KSU’s pavilion was the "Fire-Fighting Robot," developed by the Center of Smart Robotics Research at the College of Computer and Information Sciences. This robot uses smart sensors and an advanced navigation system to detect fires and respond quickly in enclosed spaces.
PNU introduced its "Absarnna" project, which aims to train the eyes of children with astigmatism and amblyopia. Absarnna uses eye tracking technology—an AI technique—to measure how games impact eye exercises for children. The project also includes designing engaging games for children and ensuring web accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
Energy Efficiency and Digital Economy
In terms of energy and industry leadership, AI is being applied to enhance energy efficiency and industrial production through smart technologies. Future economies are being shaped by AI-driven innovation, aiming to build a digital economy based on advanced technologies.
The participation of these universities underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing AI technology across various sectors. By focusing on national aspirations, these institutions are contributing significantly to the Kingdom's vision for a technologically advanced future.
The summit provided a platform for these universities to demonstrate their advancements in AI research and applications. It also emphasised the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and industry leaders in driving technological progress.
Overall, the event highlighted how Saudi universities are leveraging AI to address critical issues such as healthcare improvement, environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and economic innovation. These efforts are crucial for achieving long-term national goals.
