Saudi Heritage Celebrated Through Traditional Crafts At King Abdulaziz Camel Festival

Visitors are flocking to the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's pavilion at the King Abdulaziz Camel Festival in Al-Sayahid. The event showcases traditional crafts like al-sadu weaving and heritage garments, highlighting Saudi Arabia's rich cultural legacy. Among the displays are iconic women's outfits that reflect the nation's authenticity and heritage.

Artisan Helail bin Rizqallah Al-Harthi shared his insights with the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), stating, "I’ve been working in this craft for nearly three decades. My work focuses mainly on embroidery and al-sadu weaving, using pure silk fabrics and goat-hair threads." He expressed gratitude for the ministry's support in preserving these traditions.

Celebrating Saudi Heritage at Camel Festival

The pavilion offers a glimpse into various national heritage creations. It features garments, al-sadu works, traditional foods, cultural artifacts, and creative artwork. These exhibits collectively portray the diverse aspects of Saudi heritage. The festival provides a platform for artisans to present their work to a wider audience.

Munirah Al-Rabeeah, a specialist in traditional attire, explained her efforts in recreating historical outfits inspired by notable Saudi women. She mentioned Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman and Ghaliyya Al-Bogammiah as inspirations for her designs. Her work was showcased at the Handicrafts Exhibition at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University.

Al-Rabeeah elaborated on her creations: "My work includes the striped Najdi mutaffat, Taif’s mubaqar, the Hijazi mussaddah, the minaikhal, as well as tull, zary, men’s daglah, the women’s egal used in southern Taif and in the desert of Al-Baha, along with the al-kurta, al-masrah, and al-nashal." Her dedication to reviving these garments highlights their cultural significance.

The festival has seen a growing interest in handmade products over recent years. This surge reflects a renewed appreciation for traditional crafts among Saudis. The ministry's pavilion plays a crucial role in promoting these crafts by providing artisans with an opportunity to display their skills.
