Saudi Space Agency And KFSHRC Collaborate To Advance Space Medicine Through New MoU
The Saudi Space Agency and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in biotechnology under microgravity, astronaut health, education, and scientific research. This agreement aims to support national priorities and develop sustainable human capabilities. The signing took place at the hospital's headquarters in Riyadh, with senior officials from both organisations present.
The MoU outlines the creation of a joint framework for collaboration between the two entities. This partnership will focus on astronaut health and biotechnology, forming specialised teams to identify priority projects and their implementation strategies. The agreement also aims to support scientific research in health and biotechnology under microgravity conditions, translating research findings into practical applications.

Under this collaboration, there will be a concerted effort to advance innovative research in health and biotechnology within microgravity environments. The MoU includes cooperation on astronaut healthcare programs that cover medical services before, during, and after space missions. This initiative is part of the agency’s broader efforts to empower scientific research and foster innovation in critical fields.
KFSHRC has achieved significant recognition for its contributions to healthcare. It ranks first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally among the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centers for 2025. Additionally, it holds the title of the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East according to Brand Finance 2024.
The Saudi Space Agency places great emphasis on advancing research in life sciences and space medicine. Through its "Saudi Journey to Space" mission, the agency has conducted advanced experiments in stem cell research, cardiovascular studies, as well as neurological and brain research under microgravity conditions. These efforts highlight its dedication to building quality partnerships with leading national scientific and medical institutions.
KFSHRC was also included in Newsweek magazine's World’s Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025. This recognition underscores its commitment to excellence in healthcare innovation. The collaboration with the Saudi Space Agency further strengthens the Kingdom’s presence in space-related life sciences.
This partnership marks a significant step towards enhancing Saudi Arabia's capabilities in biotechnology and astronaut health research. By working together, both organisations aim to contribute meaningfully to scientific advancements that align with national goals.
