Saudi-South African Business Forum Aims To Strengthen Economic Partnership And Trade Relations

The Saudi delegation's visit to South Africa underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to bolstering trade and economic ties with Africa. This commitment was initially declared by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the Saudi-African Summit in Riyadh last November. The event, organized by the National Competitiveness Center (NCC) alongside the Federation of Saudi Chambers and South African Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Competition, aims to enhance bilateral relations.

Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al-Kassabi, Minister of Commerce and NCC Chairman, highlighted that the forum is being held nearly a year after King Salman announced a $1 billion initiative for development projects in Africa over ten years. These efforts are expected to boost trade and business relations with South Africa significantly. The potential economic collaboration between both nations could see trade volumes reach approximately $3.5 billion in 2023.

Strengthening Saudi-South African Economic Ties

The Saudi-South African Business Forum commenced with participation from 420 leaders across government and private sectors from both countries. Notable attendees included Saudi Ambassador Faisal bin Falah Al-Harbi, South African Minister of Small Business Development Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, and Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille. The forum featured discussions on enhancing economic partnerships and overcoming business sector challenges.

Vice Minister of Commerce Dr. Iman bint Habbas Al-Mutairi presented key reforms aimed at boosting Saudi Arabia's competitiveness. Since 2016, over 820 economic reforms have been implemented by 65 government entities across nine sectors. These reforms have led to the issuance or updating of around 1,200 regulations, strengthening the legal framework and making Saudi Arabia a prime destination for businesses.

Dr. Al-Mutairi emphasized that Saudi Arabia now permits 100% foreign ownership in most business sectors. The establishment of the Saudi Business Center has streamlined business operations by reducing licensing requirements by 55%. These changes have significantly improved the Kingdom's business environment, attracting global companies and entrepreneurs.

The forum included two panel discussions focusing on cooperation in mining and expanding economic partnerships between Saudi Arabia and South Africa. Participants explored promising opportunities and shared expertise in tourism and industrial development sectors. Mechanisms for addressing business challenges were also introduced during these sessions.

Memoranda of Cooperation

During the event, two memoranda of cooperation were signed: one between the Saudi Export-Import Bank with ABSA and Standard banks, and another between the Saudi Export Development Authority with Skytower Development Company. These agreements aim to facilitate further collaboration between financial institutions in both countries.

Earlier engagements saw Dr. Al-Kassabi meeting with Saudi business representatives to discuss challenges they face abroad. He also participated in inaugurating SMSA Express's operations center in South Africa, which will offer logistical solutions for businesses operating between the two nations.

This strategic visit reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties with Africa while fostering mutual growth through collaborative initiatives across various sectors.
