Minister Of Energy Prince Abdulaziz Launches Saudi Smart Grid Conference Focused On Sustainability

The 12th Saudi Smart Grid Conference and its exhibition were launched by Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz in Riyadh. The event, themed "Energy and Sustainability," focuses on renewable energy integration, grid design standards, energy efficiency, and innovations in storage technology. In his speech, the minister stressed the importance of smart grid technologies in transitioning energy systems globally and within Saudi Arabia.

Prince Abdulaziz highlighted that smart grids depend on integrating metering devices, process automation, and communication technologies. These elements are crucial for enhancing electricity production, transmission, distribution, and consumption. He also emphasized the Kingdom's digital transformation efforts to meet Vision 2030 goals.

Saudi Smart Grid Conference Inaugurated by Minister

Since 2021, over 11 million smart meters have been installed across Saudi Arabia. These meters play a vital role in boosting energy efficiency by allowing consumers to monitor their usage in real-time through smart applications. This capability helps consumers make informed decisions about conserving electricity.

The Ministry of Energy aims to automate 40% of distribution networks by the end of 2025. Currently, they have achieved 32% of this target. Nine advanced control centers are being developed to operate by 2026. These centers will use advanced technologies for precise real-time monitoring of network systems.

The minister addressed the variable nature of renewable energy sources due to weather conditions. Efforts are underway to develop battery storage systems with capacities reaching up to 26 GWh, aiming for 48 GWh by 2030. This development is crucial for managing the stability and efficiency of renewable energy sources.

Saudi Arabia's national grid is the largest in the Middle East and Africa. The expansion of transmission and distribution networks is ongoing. Flexible transmission system technologies are being developed to promote energy exchange and reduce losses.

Control Centers and Grid Efficiency

Four regional control centers and one national center have been established. These centers' advanced systems enable efficient monitoring and operation of grids, enhancing their security and flexibility. The minister underscored these developments as essential for maintaining grid stability.

After the opening ceremony, Prince Abdulaziz witnessed several agreements related to energy being signed. He also honored winners of the Energy Hackathon where over 60 participants presented innovative solutions in energy storage, efficiency, and sustainability.

The three-day conference will feature more than 40 scientific papers discussing recent innovations and sustainable solutions in smart grids. It will also highlight opportunities for private-sector involvement and future growth prospects in this field.
