Saudi Reef Program Showcases Sustainable Agricultural Development Initiatives At COP16

The Saudi Reef Program is crucial for sustainable rural agricultural development in Saudi Arabia. It aids small farmers, producers, and cottage industry families by diversifying agriculture and promoting environmental sustainability. Ghassan Bakri, the program's Secretary General, shared these insights during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh from December 2 to 13, 2024.

Bakri highlighted the program's success in using modern technologies to enhance agricultural and food systems' sustainability. This initiative positions Saudi Arabia as a leader in rural agricultural development. "The program aims to make Saudi Arabia a global model in rural development, fortifying food security, creating new job opportunities, improving the income and living standards of rural residents, and preserving the environment and natural resources," he stated.

The program aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 by boosting local agricultural production and diversification, contributing significantly to the national economy. It emphasizes innovation and technology to transform agricultural food systems. The focus includes sectors like rainfed agriculture, fruits, Saudi coffee beans, and roses. These efforts aim to enhance productivity and increase vegetation cover across the Kingdom.

Progress has been made in automating projects and services for small-scale farmers. Bakri mentioned launching the Saudi Reef application to streamline services and promote agricultural products in the market. This initiative explores new opportunities while aligning with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture's digital transformation goals.

Bakri emphasized ongoing initiatives that support farmers by improving food security and increasing returns for families engaged in cottage industries. These efforts ensure natural resources' sustainability for future generations. The program continues introducing measures that bolster these objectives.

The conference session titled "Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development: A Path for Protecting Natural Resources and Food Security" underscored these themes. The event provided a platform for discussing strategies that align with broader environmental goals while supporting local communities.

The Saudi Reef Program's achievements reflect its commitment to sustainable practices that benefit both people and nature. By integrating technology with traditional farming methods, it sets a benchmark for other nations aiming for similar advancements in rural development.
