Saudi Postage Stamps Reflecting Cultural Legacy And Historical Significance

Saudi Arabia's postage stamps serve as a window into the nation's history and identity, capturing significant events and symbols. The King Abdulaziz Public Library houses an extensive collection of over 13,000 stamps. These stamps highlight the importance King Abdulaziz Al Saud placed on communication through this medium.

The earliest stamp in this collection dates back to March 1925, featuring the phrase "Mail of the Sultanate of Najd." This was soon followed by stamps marking the first Hajj during the Sultanate of Najd's rule and Jeddah's entry in December 1925.

Exploring Saudi Arabia's Postage Stamp Legacy

In 1349 AH, a notable stamp was released to celebrate King Abdulaziz's rise to power. It showcased the royal emblem for the first time: two crossed swords beneath a palm tree. This symbol has since become synonymous with Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom issued its first stamp bearing the name "Kingdom of Saudi Arabia" in 1934. A decade later, in 1945, a commemorative set marked King Abdulaziz's meeting with Egypt's King Farouk. Another set followed in 1946, celebrating his return from Egypt with a map of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia became part of the Universal Postal Union in 1929. The Kingdom issued its first official stamp in 1334 AH, making it the second Arab nation to release regular and commemorative stamps. This move underscored its commitment to global postal communication.

The postal service has seen considerable growth since then. Notably, development accelerated with the introduction of five-year plans starting in 1390 AH. These initiatives have modernised and expanded postal services across the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia's rich philatelic history reflects its cultural heritage and milestones. Through these stamps, one can trace pivotal moments that shaped both national identity and international relations over decades.
