Saudi Ports Authority Achieves 9.16% Increase In Tonnage For June 2024
The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) reported a 9.16% rise in cargo tonnage handled in June 2024, totalling 27,640,795 tons compared to 25,320,449 tons in June 2023. Exported containers increased by 7.78%, reaching 228,031 containers from the previous year's 211,568 containers.
Imported containers saw a 9.85% increase, totalling 245,569 containers compared to 223,547 in the same period last year. General cargo amounted to 584,906 tons, while solid bulk cargo reached 4,967,385 tons. Liquid bulk cargo was recorded at 15,551,736 tons.

The ports received fewer livestock this year with a total of 1,821,863 heads of livestock, marking an 8.51% decrease from last year's figure of 1,991,248 heads. The total number of handled containers dropped by 15.51%, standing at 594,972 compared to last year's 704,197 containers.
Mawani noted a decline in maritime traffic by 3.41%, with the number of ships decreasing to 962 from last year's count of 996 ships. Passenger numbers also fell by 18.66%, totalling 55,289 passengers compared to the previous year's figure of 67,970 passengers.
Transshipment containers experienced a significant drop of 54.89%, amounting to only 121,372 containers compared to the previous year's total of 269,082 containers.
Vehicle Handling and New Initiatives
The number of vehicles handled at the ports increased significantly by 33.93%, reaching a total of 101,146 vehicles compared to last year's figure of 75,524 vehicles.
Mawani introduced the Port Community System (PCS) under the unified logistics window (Logisti) during the first quarter of this year. This system offers over 250 e-services aimed at boosting competitiveness and productivity within the maritime transport sector.
The new PCS initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency and streamline processes across Saudi ports.
