Saudi Pavilion At Expo Osaka 2025 Achieves Gold In New York Architectural Design Awards For Cultural Excellence
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025 in Japan has achieved a significant milestone by winning the Gold Prize in the Cultural Architecture – Interactive and Experiential Spaces category. This recognition from the New York Architectural Design Awards highlights the pavilion's architectural brilliance and its innovative design that captures the essence of Saudi culture through an engaging visitor experience.
Designed by Foster + Partners, the pavilion offers a sensory journey beginning with an outer courtyard leading to a central inner courtyard. This space is inspired by Saudi Arabia's diverse cities and regions, providing a contemplative environment. The structure also serves as a venue for performances and cultural events throughout the six-month Expo duration.

The pavilion's design reflects Saudi villages and cities, fostering discovery while highlighting cultural connections between Saudi Arabia and Japan. It prioritises sustainability with passive cooling strategies, low-carbon materials, energy-efficient lighting, and solar technologies, meeting international and Japanese sustainability standards.
A standout feature is its modular façade using Voronoi diagrams to create striking visual patterns. This reconfigurable façade enhances architectural adaptability while maintaining environmental harmony. The pavilion also emphasises accessibility with Braille signage, accessible pathways, and interactive elements for diverse needs.
Led by CEO Dr. Sumayah Al-Solaiman and Project Manager Fatima Al-Doukhi of the Saudi Architecture and Design Commission, the pavilion embodies Saudi culture's spirit through immersive experiences. It has attracted over half a million visitors, showcasing vibrant representations of Saudi culture and innovation.
