Saudi Arabia Advances Towards Self-Sufficiency With Local Banana Seedling Production

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) in Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step towards agricultural innovation and sustainability by localizing the production of banana seedlings. This initiative, primarily focused in the Jazan region, aligns with the broader objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 by promoting self-sufficiency, contributing to the growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and ensuring sustainable development. The ministry's dedication to enhancing sustainable agriculture and food security is evident through this groundbreaking effort.

MEWA's center for plant tissue culture and biotechnology has been at the forefront of this achievement, successfully cultivating high-quality, disease-free banana seedlings. These seedlings have been grown both in greenhouses and open fields, adapting well to the Kingdom's climate. This advancement not only marks a milestone in agricultural technology but also promises to elevate the sector's sustainability and productivity levels.

The localization of banana seedling production is expected to draw investors towards tissue culture technology. This technology is pivotal for intensifying the production of various high-nutritional-value varieties, thereby generating substantial economic returns. The ministry highlighted the economic inefficiency of importing seedlings, which results in a significant loss of approximately 25%. In stark contrast, the locally produced seedlings boast a much lower expected loss rate, showcasing the economic benefits of this initiative.

In a strategic move to bolster this initiative, MEWA has launched the first phase of two ambitious projects. These include planting 45 million fruit trees on agricultural terraces and four million lemon trees using renewable water sources by the year 2030. These projects are integral components of the Saudi Green Initiative, reflecting a collaborative effort between private sector institutions and the Agricultural Development Fund. The emphasis on local production underscores a sustainable and cost-effective approach to fruit cultivation in the Kingdom.
