Saudi Medical Team Achieves Successful Separation Of Conjoined Eritrean Twins In 15-Hour Surgery
The Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme's medical team has successfully separated Eritrean twins, Asma and Someya, who were conjoined at the head. This intricate surgery took place at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in Riyadh. The procedure lasted 15 and a half hours, involving a dedicated team of 36 consultants and specialists from various fields.
Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, the head of the medical team and Supervisor General of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), stated that the operation adhered to directives from Saudi leadership. The team utilised neuronavigational technology and surgical microscopy to ensure precise planning and maintain high safety standards throughout the surgery.

The separation process involved several stages, starting with an initial surgical procedure. This was followed by three interventional radiology procedures aimed at blocking shared arteries and veins. Dr. Moutasem Azzubi, a consultant pediatric neurosurgeon, explained that the twins had fused skull bones, brain membranes, veins, and some arteries.
The pediatric plastic surgery team played a crucial role by inserting tissue expanders under the skin over several months. This technique allowed for sufficient skin coverage post-separation. The family of the twins expressed deep gratitude to Saudi leadership for enabling this life-saving procedure and providing excellent medical care.
This successful operation marks the 64th separation performed under the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme. Over its 35-year history, the programme has treated more than 149 cases from 27 countries. It continues to receive robust support from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
The programme's achievements highlight Saudi Arabia's advanced healthcare capabilities and professionalism in its medical teams. The family's appreciation extended beyond medical care to include gratitude for the Kingdom’s hospitality during their stay.
Saudi Arabia's commitment to humanitarian efforts is evident through such successful surgeries, showcasing its dedication to providing top-notch healthcare services globally.
