Saudi Arabian Delegation Enhances Cultural Ties With Italy Through Official Visit

The recent two-day visit to Italy by Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al-Saud, the Saudi Minister of Culture, underscores a significant stride in cultural collaboration between Saudi Arabia and Italy. A pivotal meeting with Gennaro Sangiuliano, the Italian Minister of Culture, was a key highlight, focusing on bolstering cultural ties and celebrating the progress made under the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding. The discussions, aimed at enhancing cooperative initiatives, saw the participation of Vice Minister of Culture Hamed bin Mohammed Fayez and Assistant Minister of Culture Rakan bin Ibrahim AlTouq.

During his visit, Prince Bader explored the Saudi Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, marking the Ministry of Culture's fourth participation in this prestigious event. The 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, set to run from 20 April to 24 November 2024, will feature Manal AlDowayan's multimedia installation "Shifting Sands: A Battle Song" at the Arsenale, Sale d’Armi. The project is a collaborative effort with curators Jessica Cerasi and Maya El Khalil, alongside Assistant Curator Shadin AlBulaihed.

Saudi-Italian Cultural Ties Bolstered

Another significant stop was the ‘Wadi AlFann, Journeys in Land Art, Towards Wadi AlFann, AlUla’ showcase. This event is a collaboration between the Royal Commission for AlUla and the Ministry of Culture, held at the Abbazia building in Venice from April 16 to 30. It highlights the first five artists commissioned for large-scale, site-specific works at AlUla’s new contemporary art destination, Wadi AlFann. The featured artists include Manal AlDowayan, Agnes Denes, Michael Heizer, Ahmed Mater, and James Turrell.

Prince Bader expressed enthusiasm about sharing Saudi Arabia’s cultural vision and upcoming projects with both Venetian audiences and international visitors. He emphasized the commitment to continuing cultural exchanges with Italy, highlighting this as a crucial moment in the cultural calendar.

This visit not only reinforces the cultural bonds between Saudi Arabia and Italy but also showcases Saudi Arabia's dedication to promoting its culture on a global stage. Through initiatives like the Venice Biennale participation and the Wadi AlFann showcase, Saudi Arabia is keen on presenting its rich cultural heritage and contemporary artistic endeavors to a worldwide audience.
