Saudi Irrigation Organization Highlights Strategic Importance Of Irrigation At ICID Meeting In Kuala Lumpur
The CEO of the Saudi Irrigation Organization (SIO), Mohammed bin Zaid Abu-Haid, took part in the third meeting of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID). This event was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of the fourth World Irrigation Forum (WIF4). Abu-Haid highlighted that irrigation is now a strategic issue tied to national resilience, food security, and environmental sustainability.
Abu-Haid pointed out that countries with limited water resources face significant challenges. The agricultural sector uses most of the water supply, and in Saudi Arabia, these sources are mainly non-renewable. This situation makes it a strategic priority for the Kingdom's water sector to focus on sustainable solutions.

The SIO is crucial in transitioning towards sustainable and reusable water sources. It aims to build capacity and excel in managing irrigation and reclaimed water sectors. The organization also focuses on regulating the water sector to achieve sustainability goals.
During the meeting, members stressed that updating irrigation and agricultural infrastructure is vital. This modernization should follow integrated water resources management principles to ensure sustainable food security amid climate change, water scarcity, and increasing food demand.
Abu-Haid concluded his speech by inviting ICID members and international partners to join the 11th World Water Forum. This event is scheduled for 2027 in Riyadh. He emphasized collaboration as a key factor in addressing global water challenges effectively.
