Saudi Arabia Issues Health Advisory For 2025 Hajj Pilgrimage
The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has issued a health advisory for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. The guidelines stress that only those in good health and physical condition should participate. This pilgrimage is physically taxing, with pilgrims often walking up to 25 kilometres daily in Saudi Arabia's intense summer heat, which can reach 51.8°C.
Health Risks and Recommendations
The Ministry of Health advises certain groups to delay their pilgrimage due to potential health risks. These include individuals over 65, those with chronic illnesses like heart or kidney disease, immune-compromised individuals, cancer patients, terminally ill people, pregnant women, and children under 12. The harsh conditions could exacerbate existing health issues for these groups.
In 2023, over 1,300 pilgrims reportedly died during Hajj due to extreme heat and physical demands. Many fatalities occurred among the elderly and those with chronic illnesses who struggled with long walks under direct sunlight without adequate rest or shelter.
Entry Visa Health Requirements
To ensure safety, several health requirements are necessary for obtaining a Hajj or Umrah entry visa. For MERS-CoV precautions, individuals must wash hands frequently, use tissues when sneezing or coughing, avoid touching the face with unwashed hands, and wear masks in crowded areas. Personal hygiene is crucial.
Travellers from yellow fever risk areas need a valid vaccination certificate or face six days of strict surveillance. For meningococcal meningitis protection, a quadrivalent vaccine certificate is required for pilgrims and workers. Ciprofloxacin tablets will be given at entry points to visitors from the African meningitis belt.
Additional Health Measures
International pilgrims at higher risk are advised to get the seasonal influenza vaccine before arriving. This includes pregnant women, children under five, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions. Food restrictions also apply; only canned or sealed food in small quantities for personal use is allowed into Saudi Arabia.
The advisory underscores the importance of prioritising health and safety during Hajj 2025. Those not meeting health criteria should consider postponing their pilgrimage until conditions improve. Pilgrims should adhere to all health requirements and take necessary precautions for a safe spiritual journey.
The Saudi government's measures aim to protect pilgrims' well-being during this significant religious event. By following these guidelines and recommendations, participants can better ensure their safety while fulfilling their spiritual obligations.
