Saudi Royal Reserve Unveils Major Environmental Protection Effort At World Economic Forum

The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve Development Authority recently showcased its significant environmental protection initiative at the World Economic Forum (WEF) special meeting on April 28-29. This event, aimed at fostering global cooperation, economic advancement, and the promotion of sustainable energy practices, served as an ideal platform for highlighting Saudi Arabia's dedication to environmental sustainability. This commitment is vividly illustrated through the Saudi Green Initiative, with the Rafha-based reserve's project standing out as a prime example of innovative environmental monitoring and protection strategies.

Marked as the largest project of its kind, the initiative employs 40 drones to enhance the efficiency of monitoring activities within the reserve. These drones have revolutionized the way rangers detect and address environmental violations such as unauthorized firewood collection and overgrazing. Thanks to this advanced technology, a vast area of 427 km² can now be surveyed in under five hours—a staggering 220% increase in efficiency compared to the previous capability, which took around 13 hours for the same task.

Moreover, this project aligns with broader sustainability goals by minimizing dependence on traditional fuel-powered vehicles. During the WEF meeting, two drone models were highlighted for their significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions by over 66%. This initiative not only showcases technological innovation but also emphasizes Saudi Arabia's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

Another cornerstone of this project is the comprehensive training program it offers. Over 100 environmental monitors have been trained, accumulating more than 8,000 hours of instruction. This training is integral to the reserve's technical infrastructure, which incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and data science. These elements together enhance the project's capability to monitor and protect the environment effectively.
