Saudi Green Initiative Aims For Over 1.3 Million Trees In Residential Zones
In a significant step towards enhancing the environmental landscape and quality of life within Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing has successfully planted over 350,000 trees. This initiative is part of the first phase of its comprehensive plan aimed at augmenting vegetation cover across residential zones. This effort aligns with the ambitious Saudi Green Initiative, underscoring the Kingdom's commitment to environmental sustainability and improved living standards as envisioned in Saudi Vision 2030.
The Green Suburbs Project, spearheaded by the ministry, falls under the Quality of Life Program initiatives. It has set an impressive target to plant more than 1.3 million trees across various regions of the Kingdom. The project's scope includes enhancing over 55 million square meters of residential project areas, which encompasses approximately 100,000 housing units.

Significant strides have already been made in several key areas. In Riyadh, the "Murcia" and "West of the Airport" projects have seen the planting of over 186,000 trees. Meanwhile, "Pearl of Diyar" in Yanbu Governorate has been enriched with about 94,000 trees. Additionally, King Abdullah Housing in Al-Ahsa Governorate now boasts around 39,000 newly planted trees. Other projects like Dar Al-Jewar, Bouvardia City, and Diyar Al-Hasa have also witnessed substantial green additions.
The overarching goal of the Green Suburbs Project is not only to beautify and enhance residential areas but also to foster a sustainable environment in new city planning initiatives. By adhering to the highest standards of environmental sustainability and employing green building techniques, the project aims to promote efficient use of natural resources. This initiative is a testament to the ministry's dedication to transitioning towards a more sustainable environment by expanding green spaces and championing sustainable development.
Launched at the end of last year, the Green Suburbs Initiative is set to unfold in three phases, culminating in 2025. This strategic approach is expected to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and pollution in residential areas. Ultimately, it contributes significantly towards achieving Saudi Vision 2030's goals, particularly those related to elevating the quality of life within the Kingdom.
