Saudi Green Initiative Day Celebrates Community Efforts For Environmental Stewardship In Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia marks its second annual Saudi Green Initiative Day on March 27, celebrating the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) in 2021 by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. This initiative is a community-driven effort aimed at implementing significant environmental actions to enhance life quality in Saudi Arabia, aligning with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
The SGI focuses on environmental protection, energy transition, and sustainability programs. Its main goals include reducing emissions, increasing afforestation, and protecting land and sea areas in the Kingdom. The initiative plays a crucial role in regional and international cooperation for a sustainable global future.

SGI Day concludes a month-long campaign highlighting collective action under the theme "Promoting a culture of environmental stewardship." It brings together citizens, public institutions, private sectors, and non-profits to tackle environmental challenges. Throughout March, communities across Saudi Arabia united to demonstrate their shared responsibility for sustainable change.
Two awareness campaigns supported these efforts through SGI's social channels. The #GreenRamadan campaign encouraged people to share how they observed Ramadan sustainably by reducing food waste, saving electricity, conserving water, and more. Participants used the hashtag to showcase their efforts with friends and family.
On SGI Day, a live mosaic on the website celebrates sustainability measures undertaken by individuals during Ramadan. This dynamic feature will continue to highlight new entries beyond Ramadan. Additionally, the #PawsToChangeChallenge by SGI’s mascot Namour inspired Saudi youth to adopt simple yet impactful sustainable actions during Ramadan and share them on social media.
The momentum from last December's events in Riyadh continues with SGI Day 2025. The Saudi Green Initiative Forum was held alongside the UNCCD "COP16 Riyadh" Conference. This forum provided an essential platform for dialogue among policymakers, business leaders, and experts on addressing environmental challenges and supporting green transformation pathways.
Investments and Renewable Energy Progress
With investments exceeding SAR705 billion, SGI is actively driving over 85 initiatives across all 13 regions of Saudi Arabia. Last year saw significant progress as 6.6 GW of renewable energy capacity was connected to the grid, with 44.2 GW currently under development.
The Liquid Fuel Displacement Program contributes to emission reduction by operating four efficient natural gas power plants with a total capacity of 5.6 GW. This aligns with the Kingdom’s goal of achieving an optimal energy mix for electricity production by 2030.
Efforts in Afforestation and Wildlife Conservation
Efforts to increase vegetation cover have led to planting 115 million trees and rehabilitating 118,000 hectares of degraded land—equivalent to over 165,000 football fields—as of 2024. Additionally, more than 7,500 endangered species have been rewilded through various breeding programs.
This includes species like the Arabian oryx, Arabian gazelles, ibexes, houbara bustards, and cheetahs. These initiatives demonstrate Saudi Arabia's commitment to building a sustainable future while fostering a thriving economy.
The Kingdom's dedication solidifies its position in the global environmental landscape as it works towards sustainability for future generations.
