Royal Reserve Supports Environmental Goals On Saudi Green Initiative Day
In a significant stride towards environmental conservation, the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority marked its presence at the Saudi Green Initiative Day on March 27. This participation underscores the authority's dedication to amplifying awareness on environmental preservation and biodiversity through its official channels. Central to its mission is the commitment to fulfill the objectives set by Saudi Vision 2030, focusing on environmental protection and enhancing the quality of life in the Kingdom by addressing climate change and promoting a vibrant society.
The authority's endeavors are geared towards fostering a green and sustainable future, urging community involvement in environmental initiatives. Its efforts are meticulously aligned with the strategic goals of the Council of Royal Reserves, aiming to meet the ambitious targets of the Saudi Green Initiative. These include the planting of 10 billion trees across Saudi Arabia and safeguarding 30% of its terrestrial and marine territories by 2030.

Through its initiatives, the authority has significantly contributed to increasing vegetation cover within the reserve by dispersing seeds that play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, air purification, combating desertification, and mitigating climate change impacts. The reserve, a sanctuary for over 179 plant species, has witnessed remarkable afforestation projects that have bolstered vegetation cover expansively.
An integral part of the authority's strategy includes a comprehensive vegetation cover monitoring and evaluation project. Leveraging advanced remote sensing technology, data analytics, and satellite imagery, this project has unveiled a substantial increase in vegetation cover within the reserve. From a mere 1.5% in 2018, the vegetation cover area has surged to approximately 6.7%. As of 2023, the cumulative total of trees planted has reached an impressive count of 593,700.
Spanning an area of 91,500 square kilometers, the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve stands as the second-largest royal reserve in Saudi Arabia. It is celebrated for its breathtaking natural landscapes and unique biodiversity, home to rare species such as rhim gazelles, Arabian oryx, Arabian ostriches, alongside a diverse array of flora.
This concerted effort by the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority not only highlights Saudi Arabia's commitment to environmental sustainability but also sets a benchmark for conservation efforts worldwide. By actively engaging local communities and leveraging cutting-edge technology for environmental preservation, the authority is making significant strides towards achieving the lofty goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and Saudi Vision 2030.
