Saudi Green Initiative Marks Progress In The Quest To Plant 10 Billion Trees

The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, marks a significant stride towards environmental sustainability in Saudi Arabia. Launched three years ago, the initiative has catalyzed a series of projects aimed at transforming the Kingdom into a greener landscape. Among these, the 'Vegetation Cover Development' initiative stands out for its ambitious goal to plant 10 billion trees, thereby rehabilitating over 40 million hectares of degraded lands. This effort not only seeks to enhance air quality but also to mitigate the effects of dust and sandstorms across the country.

Parallel to this, the 10 Billion Tree Study delves into the practicality of achieving this monumental tree-planting goal in the forthcoming decades. The study underscores the potential benefits such as increased vegetation cover, improved quality of life, conservation of endangered species, and a significant reduction in climate change impacts. Furthermore, the National Greening Program outlines a clear path towards realizing the 10 billion tree target by 2100, with interim goals of planting 400 million trees by 2030 and 4.7 billion by 2060. This comprehensive program aims to enhance vegetation cover across various natural habitats including urban areas, highways, and green spaces, ultimately fostering healthier living conditions and better air quality for residents.

Efforts are also underway to manage and develop forests with an eye towards reducing degradation and rehabilitating areas in decline by 2030. This includes plans to restore 348,000 hectares of degraded forests and plant 60 million native trees in areas severely affected by deforestation. Similarly, rangeland preservation initiatives are set to rehabilitate eight million hectares across 26 sites, aiming to curb sandstorms, improve public health, and offer nature-based solutions for carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation.

The development of 50 national parks is another cornerstone of the SGI, designed to lower carbon emissions, combat desertification, restore biodiversity, and provide nature-based solutions for carbon capture and climate change mitigation. These efforts include comprehensive assessments for developing infrastructure in both existing and new parks to promote eco-tourism and support local economies. Collaborative projects with royal reserves are also in place to plant seven million native trees, thereby reducing carbon emissions and enhancing eco-tourism opportunities.

Engagement with both public and private sectors in afforestation programs is crucial for the success of SGI. These collaborations aim to plant, grow, and protect millions of native trees across the Kingdom. The overarching goal is to slash carbon emissions, leverage nature-based solutions for carbon capture and climate change mitigation, and significantly improve air quality.

Overall, the Saudi Green Initiative emerges as one of the globe's most ambitious reforestation projects. It directly addresses critical environmental challenges such as reduced rainfall, limited arable land availability, and dwindling forest areas. The initiative's primary objective of planting 10 billion trees not only represents 1% of the global afforestation target but also accounts for 20% of the Middle East Green Initiative's goal to plant 50 billion trees.
