Saudi Green Building Forum Highlights Local Solutions At UNEA-7 For Global Environmental Goals
The Saudi Green Building Forum (SGBF) recently wrapped up its involvement in the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). This event took place at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi from December 8 to 12. SGBF's participation highlighted Saudi Arabia's commitment to engaging in global environmental discussions and underscored the importance of local solutions in advancing worldwide environmental goals.
On the assembly's opening day, SGBF hosted a significant side event titled "Building the Future Together: Local Solutions for Global Goals." Prince Dr. Faisal bin Mishaal bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Qassim Region, delivered remarks through Eng. Salman Al-Suwaina. The governor noted that Saudi Arabia's strides in sustainability reflect leadership directives prioritising environmental action and sustainable development as key components of national growth.

Prince Dr. Faisal highlighted that the world is at a crucial juncture in international environmental efforts, given the interconnected nature of ecosystems and overlapping challenges across various landscapes. He emphasised that the health of one part of the planet directly affects others, making environmental issues more than mere statistics. He also discussed challenges faced by Saudi Arabia and Qassim Region, such as desertification and declining vegetation cover.
The event saw attendance from notable figures including UNEA-7 President Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al-Amri, who also leads Oman's Environment Authority. Additionally, Sultan Hajiyev, Chair of the Committee of Permanent Representatives and Azerbaijani Ambassador to Kenya, was present alongside senior UN officials and representatives from member states and stakeholder groups.
SGBF is a prominent nonprofit organisation supporting environmental sustainability in building, construction, and urban development both nationally and regionally. It holds special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and serves as an observer on issues like desertification, biodiversity, and industries. The forum actively represents national experiences while aligning local efforts with global environmental goals under Saudi Vision 2030.
Concluding its participation at UNEA-7, SGBF stressed that organised local actions are essential for achieving global sustainable development goals. The forum highlighted that future sustainability relies on international cooperation grounded in shared responsibility and environmental justice for future generations.
