Saudi Grand Mosque's Expansion Project Set To Double Capacity For Pilgrims

The Ministry of Finance is overseeing the largest expansion project ever undertaken at the Grand Mosque. This Saudi Third Expansion, led by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, aims to significantly increase the mosque's capacity to accommodate more pilgrims.

The project will expand the mosque's footprint from 414,000 square meters to an impressive 1.564 million square meters. This nearly doubles the prayer area from 390,000 to 912,000 square meters. The number of restrooms will increase from 3,515 to 16,726, and ablution facilities will rise from 2,479 to 12,639.

Grand Mosque Capacity Boost

Climate control will see a substantial upgrade, with cooling capacity boosted from 39,000 to 199,000 refrigeration tons. The construction allows for future growth with additional prayer floors and corridors. This ensures that the Grand Mosque can continue to serve an increasing number of worshippers.

Aesthetic Enhancements

The expansion goes beyond functionality to include aesthetic improvements. Movable and fixed glass domes, intricate glass facades, and exterior metal mashrabiyyas create a captivating interplay of light and colour. Swarovski crystal accents and Quranic calligraphy spanning 2,700 square meters further enrich the space.

Government Commitment

This expansion reflects the Saudi government's dedication to providing pilgrims with an exceptional experience. Improved amenities, increased capacity, and a focus on easy access will ensure that worshippers perform their rituals comfortably and safely year-round.
