Saudi Global Water Innovation Prize Platform Attracts Over 2,570 Entries From 119 Countries
The Global Prize for Innovation in Water (GPIW), initiated by the Saudi Water Authority in 2023, has quickly become a significant platform for innovation. It has received over 600 submissions from universities, research centres, and start-ups across three editions. This prize unites scientific ideas with technological solutions ready for application.
In its first year, the prize attracted 85 entities. By 2024, this number grew to 199, and in 2025, it reached 316 participants. This growth signifies its evolution from a niche award to a global platform drawing top researchers worldwide. The third edition in 2025 marked remarkable growth, with entries rising from 540 in 2024 to over 2,570 from 119 countries in 2025.

This increase of more than 400% within a year highlights the prize's expanding influence. The surge in participation led to the selection of 36 innovative projects from 22 countries for the final stage. The winners will be announced on Monday, December 8, in Jeddah.
The prize's international appeal is evident as it attracts leading universities and research labs from countries like the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Brazil, and Morocco. Additionally, numerous start-ups are presenting groundbreaking solutions in water management fields such as desalination and reuse.
The figures underscore the rapid expansion of GPIW over three years. Participating countries have more than doubled while applicants increased by over 375%. The number of participating entities rose from 85 to 316. This solidifies the prize's status as an international hub for scientific excellence and accelerates innovation transition from labs to real-world applications.
