Saudi-German Joint Commission Convenes 21st Session To Deepen Economic And Energy Cooperation

The latest session of the Saudi–German Joint Commission on Economic and Technical Cooperation reinforces a growing partnership between Riyadh and Berlin. Delegations from both governments met in Riyadh to focus on energy, industry, investment and technology, while also reviewing new opportunities in renewable energy, hydrogen and healthcare that align with shared long-term interests.

The 21st session of the Saudi–German Joint Commission was co-chaired by Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katharina Reiche. Officials from multiple ministries and agencies in both countries attended, reflecting the broad scope of economic and technical cooperation under discussion.

Saudi-German Joint Commission Deepens Energy Ties

Talks during the Saudi–German Joint Commission session focused heavily on energy cooperation, including traditional and low-carbon resources. Participants examined ways to expand joint work across electricity, hydrogen, and renewable projects, while also assessing industrial and investment partnerships. Healthcare technology and digital solutions were also considered, linking economic and technical cooperation to wider development goals.

On the sidelines of the Saudi–German Joint Commission, the Saudi–German Business Council convened to advance economic and technical cooperation between private entities. During this meeting, both sides signed a memorandum of understanding that sets a framework for cooperation in several energy fields, supporting project development, knowledge transfer and potential joint investments by Saudi and German companies.

Several additional agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed between Saudi and German public and private organisations during the Saudi–German Joint Commission events. These documents highlighted the contribution of the private sector to economic and technical cooperation, and demonstrated how companies in both countries support government efforts to deepen trade, technology exchange and investment links across key sectors.

An energy-focused roundtable formed another part of the programme linked to the Saudi–German Joint Commission. Leading energy companies from Saudi Arabia and Germany joined the discussion. Participants reviewed current and planned investment opportunities in the energy sector, exchanged views on market developments and examined options to strengthen partnerships in generation, transmission, clean fuels and related technologies.

The German delegation also visited King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, in the presence of Minister of Energy and Chairman of KAUST’s Board of Trustees Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The visit was organised alongside the Saudi–German Innovation Summit at KAUST, where Minister Reiche and the delegation examined the university’s work in research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

During the summit at KAUST, the two ministers witnessed the signing of several memoranda of understanding between KAUST and German institutions. These memoranda seek to connect the Saudi and German startup ecosystems, provide support for early-stage firms and help move research outcomes into commercial markets, further linking academic research with practical economic and technical cooperation.
