Saudi Games Torch Completes Month-Long Journey Across Kingdom, Returns To Riyadh
The Saudi Games 2024 torch has returned to Riyadh after a month-long journey across Saudi Arabia, covering over 3,500 kilometers. This torch is more than a sports emblem; it embodies the noble values of the Saudi Games and conveys messages of peace and friendship. It also symbolizes unity, encouraging everyone in the Kingdom to engage in this annual sporting event.
Launched in 2022 with support from leadership, the torch aligns with Vision 2030's goals. It actively participates in the Quality of Life program by promoting physical activity and striving for sports excellence regionally and globally. The torch's journey included visits to at least 17 cities, celebrating cultural, historical, and tourist landmarks.

The torch relay featured notable figures like Ahmed Eid, the first president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), who carried it from Prince Fahd bin Saad bin Abdullah of Diriyah. Other participants included Mohammed Al-Mukhalis, a world gold medalist in Jiu-Jitsu; Talal Al-Balawi, a Paralympic weightlifting champion; Youssef Masrahi, an athletics champion; and Nawaf Al-Temyat, Asian Player of the Year in 2000.
During its journey, the torch visited at least 47 cultural and historical sites. These included Bujairi District in Diriyah, Jabal Ikmah and Mughayra Heritage Sports Village in AlUla, Bajdah Desert in NEOM, and Wadi Lajab in Jazan. The presence of champions and influencers highlighted significant contributions to the nation.
The Saudi Games have significantly influenced the Kingdom's sports system. The previous edition generated nearly SAR750 million in economic activity with prize money exceeding SAR260 million. It created 478 jobs with a workforce exceeding 4,950 people. More than 9,000 athletes, technicians, and administrators from 147 clubs participated.
This year’s games will see athletes competing for prizes totaling SAR200 million. Gold medalists will receive SAR1 million each while silver medalists get SAR300,000 and bronze winners SAR100,000. In youth categories: gold medalists earn SAR100,000; silver winners receive SAR50,000; bronze earners get SAR25,000.
Competitions and Facilities
The competitions include 52 sports with over 226 individual and team events. Six sports are dedicated to Paralympics while 12 cater to youth categories. Approximately 31 sports facilities host these competitions involving participants from various clubs including 25 Paralympic clubs along with contributions from 22 sports academies across different regions.
The Saudi Games continue to foster athletic talent while promoting unity through sport across Saudi Arabia’s diverse regions by engaging communities through its extensive reach during this annual event.
