Saudi Fund For Development Signs Contracts To Rebuild St. Jude Hospital In Saint Lucia

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) and the Government of Saint Lucia have signed contracts with four firms, two from Saint Lucia and two from Saudi Arabia, to reconstruct St. Jude Hospital in Augier, Vieux-Fort. This marks a significant step towards moving health services from the George Odlum National Stadium back to St. Jude Hospital, which was severely damaged by a fire in 2009.

The reconstruction project is backed by a $75 million concessional loan from the SFD. The new hospital will feature 100 beds, maternity wards, emergency rooms, and surgical suites. It aims to serve approximately 50,000 patients annually, thereby improving healthcare quality and access to advanced medical care for the people of Saint Lucia.

SFD Rebuilds Hospital in Saint Lucia

Prime Minister Philip Joseph Pierre expressed his gratitude during the signing ceremony. He stated, "I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the government and people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the SFD, and everyone who has played a role in bringing us here today." His remarks highlighted the collaborative effort involved in reaching this milestone.

The agreements were witnessed by SFD Chief Executive Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad and Prime Minister Pierre. Al-Marshad emphasized that rebuilding St. Jude Hospital would empower local communities and enhance the healthcare sector's capacity to meet residents' needs. He also noted that this project would promote economic and social growth in Saint Lucia.

This initiative aligns with SFD’s commitment to supporting sustainable socio-economic development in developing countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The project also contributes to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting SFD's broader mission.

SFD's Global Impact

In 2024, SFD celebrated its 50th anniversary of global development impact. Over five decades, it has touched hundreds of millions of lives across more than 100 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe. As Saudi Arabia’s official international development arm, SFD has financed over 800 projects with total funding amounting to $20 billion.

Since 2023 alone, SFD has extended development loans to nine countries classified as Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This ongoing support underscores its dedication to fostering sustainable growth worldwide.

The reconstruction of St. Jude Hospital is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services in Saint Lucia. By providing modern facilities and advanced medical care options, it will ensure sustainable service delivery for years to come.

This project represents a critical investment in Saint Lucia’s healthcare infrastructure. It promises not only improved health outcomes but also economic benefits through job creation during construction and operation phases.

Overall, this collaboration between Saudi Arabia and Saint Lucia exemplifies how international partnerships can drive meaningful progress in developing regions. The new St. Jude Hospital will stand as a testament to these efforts once completed.
