Saudi-French Committee Meeting Advances Cultural And Economic Development In AlUla

The Saudi-French Ministerial committee, established under the Intergovernmental Agreement of 10 April 2018, convened for its second meeting on 15 November 2024 in Paris. This committee focuses on cultural, environmental, tourism, human, and economic development in AlUla Governorate, Saudi Arabia. The meeting was led by Saudi Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan and French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot.

Among the attendees were Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin ‎Farhan bin Abdullah and Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih. Acting CEO of the Royal Commission for AlUla Abeer AlAkel also participated. From the French side, attendees included French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati and French Minister of ‎Economy Antoine Armand. Jean-Yves Le Drian, Chairman of the French Agency for the Development of AlUla (AfAlUla), was also present.

Advancing Saudi-French Cooperation in AlUla

The ministers praised the successful partnership between France and Saudi Arabia in AlUla. They highlighted achievements in various fields such as culture and human exchanges. The committee discussed ongoing and future projects aimed at enhancing Saudi-French cooperation in AlUla. They expressed satisfaction with the progress made by Villa Hégra, a joint cultural institution dedicated to arts and culture.

The Villa Hégra project is part of an agreement signed on 4 December 2021 between France and Saudi Arabia. The ministers acknowledged the success of the archaeological program in AlUla, which has involved nearly 150 French researchers since 2018. This collaboration has significantly contributed to uncovering AlUla's rich historical heritage.

The committee members appreciated the involvement of French companies in various projects within this partnership. Notable projects include the Tramway project by ALSTOM and Sharaan Resort designed by Jean Nouvel's firm, to be constructed by Bouygues. These initiatives demonstrate strong bilateral cooperation in infrastructure development.

Additionally, they commended the partnership between the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne. This collaboration aims to enhance educational exchanges and foster academic growth between both countries.

Commitment to Future Collaboration

The representatives reaffirmed their commitment to elevating their bilateral partnership for AlUla further. They aim to maximise its impact while preserving its unique cultural identity. Both parties are dedicated to promoting this collaboration as a model for international partnerships focused on cultural preservation.

AlUla's significance as a cultural landmark was emphasised during discussions. The committee recognised its vital role in preserving Saudi heritage while fostering international cultural exchange through this partnership.
