Saudi-French Led UN Conference Aims To Revive Two-State Solution Amidst Urgent Humanitarian Needs
An international conference focused on peacefully resolving the Palestinian issue and implementing the two-state solution began at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, the event seeks to reaffirm global support for this solution, coordinate its implementation, and back efforts to end occupation, establishing a sovereign Palestinian state.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres opened the conference with a stark warning. He emphasised that the two-state solution is now "further away than ever" and has reached "a breaking point." Guterres urged participants to make this gathering a "pivotal turning point" rather than just another exercise in rhetoric.

Guterres reiterated that the two-state solution remains the only framework grounded in international law. This involves two states coexisting along pre-1967 borders with Jerusalem as their shared capital. He stressed that resolving the conflict is possible with "political will and courageous leadership," indicating that continuation is not inevitable.
The Secretary-General condemned unilateral actions, highlighting dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza. He criticised the "starvation of civilians" and "widespread destruction," urging an end to these practices. Guterres also called out the illegal annexation of the West Bank, describing it as part of a systematic erosion of peace foundations in the Middle East.
The two-day conference gathers over 120 officials and delegates. It features three panel discussions focusing on humanitarian aid, reconstruction, and other critical topics. The aim is to coordinate efforts for implementing the two-state solution while addressing immediate humanitarian needs.
Guterres expressed hope that this conference would lead to irreversible progress towards peace. He highlighted that achieving a resolution requires both political determination and bold leadership from all parties involved.
This significant gathering underscores international commitment to finding a peaceful resolution for Palestinians. It aims to establish an independent state where Palestinians can live securely alongside Israel, fostering long-term stability in the region.
