Saudi Film Commission Launches Initiative To Archive National Cinema

The Saudi Film Commission has introduced the "Film Deposit" initiative via the National Film Archive. This effort aims to collect and archive Saudi films, ensuring their preservation for future generations. The initiative targets films from various sources, including companies and filmmakers, to be securely stored and documented. This will help capture Saudi Arabia's cinematic history and its cultural and artistic dimensions.

The commission began this initiative by establishing the Saudi Film Registry. This registry includes data on over 1,000 films, encompassing feature films and documentaries of varying lengths. It sets high standards for film deposits to ensure intellectual and literary property rights are maintained in line with the submitting entities' requirements.

The "Film Deposit" initiative offers three paths for preserving national cultural heritage: secure storage, research access for scholarly study, and public availability for general access. These paths aim to foster interest among researchers, cinema enthusiasts, and the general public.
