Saudi Farmer Harnesses Worm Composting For Sustainable Agriculture

Saudi farmer Mohammad Abdullatif Al-Shaer has turned the presence of worms on his farm into an opportunity by establishing a worm compost factory in Al-Dhafir, Al-Baha. Worm compost, an organic fertilizer produced by earthworms, is used in organic agriculture as a natural soil conditioner. This compost significantly enriches soil with organic matter and enhances its properties.

Al-Shaer began his project with a tank measuring 5 meters by 60 centimeters, where he placed around 2,000 worms along with dry leaves, organic manure, and food scraps. After four months of daily monitoring, he successfully produced over 300 kilograms of compost and more than 10,000 worms. His methods have since evolved significantly.

Worm Composting Fuels Farming Success

Currently, Al-Shaer operates four tanks and has fertilized his entire farm of 250 trees using the worm compost. This compost promotes rapid tree growth and abundant fruiting. Worms play a crucial role in improving soil quality, renewing fertilization mechanisms, and nourishing crops. This leads to better agricultural practices and higher yields of fruits and vegetables.

The Director-General of the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture branch in Al-Baha, Engineer Fahd Muftah Al-Zahrani, praised the project for its innovative approach to sustainable farming. Additionally, Dr. Lubna Saad, Associate Professor of Applied Nutrition at Al-Baha University, explained that vermicompost is a mixture of worm excrement and the input materials provided to the worms.

Al-Shaer aims to transform this project into a fully-fledged enterprise capable of producing large quantities of worm compost. He also plans to share this knowledge with other farmers through agricultural festivals to encourage them to adopt this sustainable alternative to harmful chemicals.

After sieving and filtering the vermicompost, it becomes ready to fertilize various crops. This process enhances the soil's ability to absorb and retain water. The initiative has received praise from numerous farmers participating in the Al-Baha Bounties Festival for its contribution to improving the quality of their agricultural products.

This project not only benefits Al-Shaer's farm but also serves as an example for other farmers looking for sustainable farming solutions. By adopting these practices, farmers can improve their crop yields while reducing their reliance on chemical fertilizers.
