Saudi Players Make Historic Advance In International Table Tennis
The Saudi Smash tournament, a pinnacle event in the world of table tennis, is currently unfolding at King Abdullah Sports City. This prestigious competition, which runs from May 1 to 11, marks the second leg of this year's Grand Smash series. The tournament has attracted the globe's elite table tennis players, all vying for top honors in what promises to be an intense and thrilling showdown.
On the second day of the final rounds, the competition heated up with players engaging in 41 matches spread across four categories: men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, and women's doubles. A total of 32 matches were played in the round of 64, complemented by nine matches in the round of 24. In a notable achievement for Saudi Arabia, Ali Alkhadrawi and Abdulaziz Bu Shulyabi made history by becoming the first Saudis to advance to the round of 16. Their impressive performance saw them clinch a straight-sets victory (3-0) against Turki Almutairi and Khalid Alshareif. This win sets up an exciting encounter with China's top players, Wang Chuqin, the world number one, and Ma Long, ranked third globally.
Adding to the excitement, Ali Alkhadrawi will also showcase his skills in the mixed doubles category alongside Egypt's Hana Goda. The duo is scheduled to face formidable opponents in Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha of China, who are among the top seeds in both the men's and women's divisions.
